Major General Stuart Lyle Smith AO, DSC is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. In a career spanning 36 years, he has had command and leadership experience at the highest levels, including operational command of an infantry battalion of 800 personnel on Peacekeeping operations in East Timor in 2003, and 3000 Australian Defence personnel in the Middle East and Afghanistan in 2012.

Major General Smith has considerable strategic management and liaison experience from his appointments as:

  • the Chief of Army Liaison Officer to the Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (2002)
  • managing the Australian Defence Force earthquake/tsunami disaster relief response in Banda Aceh (2004)
  • leading the Australian Defence Force disaster response to Cyclone Yasi North Queensland (2011)
  • leading the Australian Defence Force security support to G20 in Brisbane (2014).

Major General Smith’s strategic project management experience includes leadership of the recent capability development of the next-generation Australian Amphibious Force of two Navy ships carrying five helicopters and 500 troops. His most recent appointment was as the Deputy to the Chief of Australian Defence Force Operations.

He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2005 for exceptional service to the Australian Army and the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) in 2013 for his Middle East command. In 2015, he was elevated as an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service as Commander 3rd Brigade and Commander 1st Division.

In 2018, Major General Smith was appointed as the independent Townsville Community Champion on youth crime issues, followed by an appointment as the State Recovery Coordinator for the Queensland Bushfires. In 2019, Major General Smith was appointed as the State Disaster Recovery Coordinator following the flood emergency in North and North West Queensland.

He has the tertiary qualifications Bachelor of Arts (1984), Master of Business Administration (2001), Diploma Defence and Strategic Studies (2006), and Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors (2007). He is currently completing part time postgraduate studies in Mediation and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland.

Major General Smith is a White Ribbon Ambassador and a Legacy Australia Ambassador.
